Unlike Hollywood depictions that typically portray the use of such poppets in a negative light to curse or harm, and while they can be used for this purpose, poppets in history were more commonly used as fetishes to heal or draw love and prosperity. The poppet works in a system of spiritual ritual practice often referred to as sympathetic magic.
